The Emerson is honored to host a summer long gallery showing of the works of celebrated artist, Manuel Pardo.
Emigrating from Cuba in 1962 at the age of ten, Manuel Pardo left behind both his family and Fidel Castro's communist regime to begin a new life in the United States. Upon arrival, Manuel endured three arduous years in foster care before his mother, Gladys Pardo, was able to join him and his sister in 1966. In Cuba, Gladys was a medical professional and a midwife, but was forced to take work as a factory laborer in New York City. Her only priority was to see that her children were educated and had the advantages needed to prevail in a new society. Toward that end, Manuel's mother worked 16 hours a day for more than 20 years. Her incredible dedication gave Manuel the drive and inspiration to succeed as an artist.
In tribute to his mother, Manuel was most known for his series of portraits featuring images of a glamorous, impeccably dressed, beautiful woman surrounded by richly appointed extravagances. These drawings and paintings were his life's obsession - a shrine to his mother that expressed his gratitude by drawing her amidst the luxuries she sacrificed to provide for her children.
Pardo's works have been widely exhibited in the United States, Europe and Mexico. Using metallic inks and archival pens, the technicolor palette for Pardo's drawings is reminiscent of the 1950's. His pieces have drawn attention and commentary from art experts worldwide. David Frankel, editorial director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, contributed a forward to a book on Pardo's collection,Manuel Pardo: Universo Sonado in Technicolor, and is also attending the opening night reception at the Emerson on Saturday, May 4.
