Yes, the Catskills have been called "Brooklyn North" before. Often.
But this year, Phoenicia is taking a real run at being the northern outpost of NYC's hipster borough. Last week, Woodstock Times reporter Violet Snow wrote that the new rustic-chic motel The Graham & Co. is bringing Brooklynites to the village in droves:
Laura Levine, proprietor of The Mystery Spot Antiques on Main Street, knows when Graham & Co. guests are visiting her store because she sees the hotel’s black loaner bicycles parked out front. “Half my customers are from Brooklyn,” she said.
The Graham & Co. is getting its guests with mentions on The Today Show and in NYC-centric websites and emails like DailyCandy, DesignSponge, and UrbanDaddy. (It helps that they have a publicist and four NYC-based designers involved in the project.) Best of all, they're turning all their guests on to other local attractions: Check out the motel's gorgeous "Neighbors" page.
So will it be the year of the hipster for Phoenicia? Let us know. If you see thick-framed glasses and Betty Page 'do's at Brio's or pork-pie hats and fauxhawks at the Phoenicia Library, send photographic proof to editor@watershedpost.com.
