ATV accident claims lives of two teenagers

A collision between an ATV and a dump truck on Route 30 in Gilboa early this afternoon left two teenagers dead, a 16-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl.

YNN reports that the two teenagers drove the ATV out of a field and into the road:

The Schoharie County sheriff confirms that the victims are a 16-year-old male and a 12-year-old female.

The sheriff said the ATV entered the southbound lane of Route 30 from a field and were struck by the dump truck.

WNYT reports that the driver of the dump truck has not been charged, but the incident is under investigation:

The driver of the dump truck was not injured and he refused medical treatment at the scene. He was transporting supplies to the Gilboa Dam construction site.

The boy was from North Blenheim and the girl was from Gilboa. The two teens were not related. No tickets were issued in the case and it is still under investigation.

Route 30 is still closed near the intersection with Route 23, and will continue to be until around 5:30.

UPDATE, 4:45pm: The two victims were 16-year-old Jeffrey Jones and 12-year-old Brittany Paes, according to Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond.

Desmond also said that the accident reconstruction team from Troop G of the New York State Police was investigating the incident.
