Snowmaking has officially begun for the season at Plattekill Mountain in Roxbury, NY. As was the case for most of the Northeast, their jumpstart on annual snowmaking operations was delayed due to the recent extreme long stretch of warm weather. Although the holiday outlook appears to be bringing more of the same unseasonable warm temps, Plattekill decided to get started with operations and take advantage of this past weekend's cold spell and fire up the snow guns.
As Plattekill General Manager Laszlo Vajtay described "we piled it high and limited snowmaking on our Learning Center and Tubing Park, both relatviely small areas so it will hopefully self-insulate and last longer". Warmer temperatures are still on the horizon for the upcoming holiday week, traditionally a busy week for winter enthusiasnts, so Plattekill hopes the snow they put down will last to provide fun for skiers and tubers during the popular holiday period. "The plan is to move the snow around once we get closer to opening day" says Vajtay.
Plattekill is planning a “soft opening” on December 26th with their Learning Center and Snowtubing Park opening. Their “new” carpet lift will spin for the first time for beginner skiers and snowboarders, and lessons will be available all week as weather prmits. The Snowtubing Park will also open for the holiday week with winter fun in store for the entire family. Please call ahead or visit www.plattekill.com for opening status and cnfirmation as operations are weather dependent.
Their food service and lounge will also be open starting December 26th every day they are open, so whether you live locally, are visiting for the holiday or are just in the area, stop by and enjoy a warm cup of holiday cheer or one of their tasty homemade soup or sandwiches.
