DakhaBrakha plays the West Kortright Centre, Thursday, Aug. 21, 7 pm
Drones and beats, crimson beads and towering black lambs-wool hats make a striking backdrop for an unexpected, refreshingly novel vision of Eastern European roots music. Theatrics, edgy music played on Indian, Arabic, African, Russian, and Australian instruments, and an astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range create what the band calls “natural order amid the world’s chaos and absurdity.”
This mix of contemporary, cosmopolitan savvy and intimacy with local traditions and meanings cuts to the heart of DakhaBrakha’s bigger mission: To make the world aware of the new country but ancient nation that is Ukraine.
