The Images & Objects, Stories & Sounds exhibit featuring the work of Woodstock artists Catherine Sebastian and Lenny Kislin is all set for the gala reception tomorrow evening, Saturday June 7th from 5 to 7 pm. Both Catherine and Lenny will be at the reception to discuss their artistic processes and shed light on the intriguing works in the exhibit.
We are pleased to announce that Catherine Sebastian will be exhibiting a photograph of Richie Havens performing at the Harumi Dome in Tokyo at the Save the Whales Concert in 1977. This Orphic Gallery exclusive is the first time this photograph has been exhibited ever. Catherine describes the circumstances of this brilliant photo of Richie surrounded by adoring Japanese fans: "Ritchie went over to the Harumi Events Hall, where we, the Dolphin Project, had set up many activities and educational lectures. He sat down, started to play guitar, and was immediately surrounded by children and adults alike. This show marked the first time Japanese and western artists shared a Japanese stage as equals."
At tomorrow's reception, Lenny will demonstrate the musical and sonic dimensions of many of his sculptures from the percussive qualities of A Drum with Balls to the chime-like affect of Nipple Rings. He will delight the audience with the dulcet tones of the Ahooga horn - a very early car horn, an antique bicycle horn, and a choice set of hand crafted and signed antique castanets from the 1890s. In addition, Mr. Kislin will perform God Bless America on the Humanatone, an antique nose whistle, which is guaranteed to stir the patriotism of the assembled.
The Orphic Gallery is located at the Roxbury Corner Store at 53525 State Highway 30, Roxbury, NY, at the corner of Main and Bridge Streets. The exhibit will run from May 24th through June 29th and be open to the public during the gallery’s normal business hours, Thursday through Saturday 12-5 pm, Sunday, 12-3 pm, and by appointment.
