Wednesday Night’s Show: Catskill Trees with Gary Mead – Black Cherry

On tomorrow night’s show we’ll be talking about the black cherry tree with Gary Mead. Every 3rd Wednesday From the Forest talks with local sawmill owner and woodworker – Gary Mead. Each program of the series will discuss one of the Catskills tree species in detail. We will cover basic information of the tree, its traditional and current uses, woodworking abilities, and any other information held secretly within its bark. Gary is the owner of Fruitful Furnishings. Fruitful Furnishings began in 1979 as a custom furniture shop. Within ten years, a sawmill was added for producing dimension parts and providing custom sawing, planing, and kiln drying services to customers wishing to furnish their homes with wood from their own trees. Gary has also opened to the public – Gary Mead Gallery – located at the mill-site, which showcases one-of-a-kind pieces made from wood. On Wednesday night’s show we’ll talk about the ins & outs of the black cherry tree and all that makes it special. Tune in at 91.3 FM or stream online at www.wioxradio.org to learn more.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?
Last day of bow season was Friday, October 15th. I had not taken a deer since the first day of the season back on the 1st of October. Two hours before shooting light would end, finally came out a doe with a 7 point buck in tow. I passed on the doe and waited for the buck to come into view for a good shot. This time all worked out well, and there is more meat in the freezer. His antlers smell like redcedar since he was rubbing on one a few minutes earlier. These bucks are pretty worn down this time of year. His belly was completely empty, and he had barely any fat; chasing does was a greater priority than feeding. Now, let’s pick up the gun. Good luck!

May the forest be with you,
