Something happens when you cross into Delaware County

Something happens when you cross from Ulster into Delaware County, the crest of Highmount, the winding slide down Belleayre Mountain. The Catskill Mountains open, welcoming. The hills loosen in pastures and meadows. Steep climbs yield some of the most majestic views in the region.

Continue on Route 28 west, climbing Palmer Hill amidst tall pines, blue slate and horse farm hollows, and find the magic of the small town, yet culturally alive, hamlet of Andes. Here Route 28 becomes Main Street, a street studded with Victorian charm, housing a myriad of antique and gift shops, galleries, lodging and eateries, from country kitchen, BBQ and tavern fare to organic small plates with artisan teas and complete fine dining. Stay the day or the weekend. It’s hard to leave.

Andes’ summers are filled with music and festivals. Lay a blanket in Ballantine Park for folk or chamber music. Come round the back of the Andes Hotel for “Cans & Clams” at the Summer Shack, always accompanied by fine tunes and horseshoes. Sip wine and nibble local cheese and Belgian chocolate at Chace-Randall Gallery’s five opening receptions each season. The bounty of Andes never ceases. You can’t miss our Saturday Main Street Farmer’s Market, brimming with local produce, grass fed beef, artisan cheeses, free range eggs, baked goods and more.
