Kids in Grades 3 to 7 will have the chance to learn dance and movement expression in “Math in Motion,” a free dance camp offered by Regina Larkin in the Maple Museum this August 4th 9am – 12 pm. Ms. Larkin, who is currently Director of Educational Programs at the Symphony Space in New York City, ran the Maple Leaf Dancer program for kids in Jefferson for 25 years. During those years, Larkin worked as choreographer and director for various dance companies such as Alvin Ailey, Joyce Trisler and Eliot Feld. Her mission is to teach dance as a tool to inspire children’s character, and to support integrity, individualism and creativity. These lessons will bring an awareness of physiology, and music as it relates to mathematics.
More specifically, Larkin plans to teach the skills of a dancer that enhance respect, focus, discipline and grace. Children will learn to coordinate physicality and rhythm by learning traditional and contemporary dance steps that evolve into movement phrases. These foundations will help youth to create dances in arranged groups. Throughout the process they will be coached to share and blend their ideas, execute their body language communications, create patterns in space using rhythms as the core to this ensemble partnership. The outcome to this process includes an informal presentation for the community, scheduled for 11 am on Friday, August 8. This program, offered by the Jefferson Historical Society as part of their Maple Museum Free Music Series & More, is made possible in part by the NYS Council on the Arts Decentralization Program with the Community Arts Grant Funds administered by the Greene County Council on the Arts.
