The Open Eye Theater is holding auditions for “Anne of Greene Gables,” adapted by R. N. Sandberg, from the popular 1908 novel by L. M. Montgomery. Needed are 8 or more young and adult actors of all ages to play 11 characters including Anne Shirley, an orphan of about 11 or 12 years, a spinster Marilla, her bachelor brother Mathew, Anne’s friend Diana Barry, Gilbert Blythe, a boy about the same age, Diana’s mother, two neighbor women, a station master, a school teacher, and a doctor. These last three characters may all be played by the same actor. Also needed are a Stage Manager and Costume Assistants. Auditions and interviews will be held at The Open Eye Theater, 960 Main Street, Margaretville, on Saturday and Sunday, April 11 and 12 at 2:00, and Monday, April 13 at 6:00.
Amie Brockway will direct the production. “This is a very fun and life-affirming play—perfect for springtime, and perfect for audiences of all ages. The characters are richly drawn, and the story is timeless,” said Ms. Brockway. To audition, actors will be asked to read from the script, or the novel.
The play is set on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Marilla and her brother Matthew want to adopt a boy to help Matthew with the chores on their farm. What they get instead is a red-headed freckle-faced girl with a head full of dreams.
“Will you please call me Cordelia? ….it’s not exactly my name, but I would love to be called Cordelia……If you call me Anne, please call me Anne spelled with an e….If you’ll only call me Anne spelled with an e, I shall try to reconcile myself to not being called Cordelia.”
Nothing and no one is ever the same after Anne comes to Green Gables.
Rehearsals will be evenings and weekends, beginning the third week in April. Performances are from May 21-May 31.
