"Why knowing your carbon footprint is important? What do you do to minimize your carbon footprint? What we, as a society, should do about it?”
Writers in the Mountains (WIM) announces its second annual Matilda Friedman Essay Writing Contest for middle and high school students in Delaware County. This year’s topic is “Why knowing your carbon footprint is important? What do you do to minimize your carbon footprint? What we, as a society, should do about it?” Students can use a carbon footprint calculator to determine their impact on the environment, and explain their findings.
Middle school students are asked to write an essay of at least 500 words, and high school students are asked to write an essay of 1,000 words. All essays should be double-spaced, whether typed or hand written. The student’s name, grade, and school should appear in the upper left corner of each page.
All essays must be returned to the Writers in the Mountains postmarked by November 9, 2013. Essays may be mailed to WIM, PO Box 474, Roxbury, NY 12474, or submitted electronically to writersinthemountains@gmail.com.
The essays will be judged for their original content with some attention paid to spelling and punctuation. We anticipate the winning essays will be creative, honest and compelling.
The judging will be done by members of the WIM Board of Directors on November 13, 2013. The first place winner at the high school level will receive an award of $100. The second place winner will receive an award of $75. The third place winner will receive an award of $50. Certificates of “Honorable Mention” in the amount of $10 each will be awarded to writers with good essays that didn’t quite make it to the winner’s circle.
