An Orange County man suffered a fatal fall while skiing on an expert trail at Hunter Mountain on Wednesday, according to a statement from state police.
58-year-old Edwin Wood was skiing on the Annapurna Trail, an expert-rated double black diamond trail, when he lost control and slid roughly 200 feet, leaving the trail and striking several trees. Wood was an expert skier, police said.
The Hunter ski patrol, Greene County paramedics and and local ambulance first responders extricated and treated Wood before pronouncing him deceased.
Wood's death is the second fatal ski accident in the Catskills so far this season. A 25-year-old Long Island man died in a fall on a black diamond trail at Belleayre on Jan. 14.
