Police arrested two Woodstock men for allegedly possessing 38 capsules of "bath salts," an illegal synthetic stimulant, in the Ulster County town of hamlet Mount Tremper on Tuesday, June 9 after pulling them over for a traffic violation, according to a press release from the town of Shandaken Police Department.
Twenty-four-year-old Kenneth R. Walker and 29-year-old Victor P. Plaza were charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class B felony.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the possession of "bath salts" illegal in 2013.
Walker and Plaza were pulled over around 10 p.m. on Tuesday while heading west on Route 28, according to Fred Holland, a detective with the Shandaken Police Department.
When the police "smelled a strong odor of marijuana" in the car, they searched the vehicle and found the bath salts, police say. (The men were also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.)
Both men were arraigned in the town of Hurley Court and are being held in the Ulster County Jail on $5,000 bail each.
