The Catskills are a bicycler’s paradise with hundreds of miles of trails and roads perfect for bikers of all skill levels. Whether you’re into off-road mountain biking, pedaling the pavement on the scenic byways or taking a relaxing ride with your family, it doesn’t take long to find an adventure that suits your needs.
Luckily, you don’t have to haul your bike up the mountains or make a pricey gear investment for occasional use. Outfitters, bike shops and other establishments offer mountain and road bicycle rentals across the Catskills. Here are 13 places to rent bikes.
DELAWARE COUNTY
Paddle & Pedal Outdoors (paddleandpedaloutdoors.com) in Hancock offers adult bike rentals for $40 per half day, $75 per full day and $140 for two days. Each additional day is $65 and discounted prices are available for kids under age 18. Rentals come with free helmets.
Plattekill Mountain (plattekill.com) in Roxbury offers a variety of bike rentals for all experience levels. Prices start at $30 per day and include a helmet, chest protector and pads. Child seats also are available for $10.
Roxbury General (roxburygeneral.com), also in Roxbury, offers 24-speed Schwinn bicycle rentals for $40 per day and $25 per half day with free helmets and locks. It also sells all kinds of goodies such as jewelry, clothes, home goods, toys and products made by Catskills locals.
Susan’s Pleasant Pheasant Farm (kayakinginthecatskills.com) in Halcottsville offers bicycle rentals for $25 per day with discounts available. Hammock, kayak and canoe rentals also are available, as well as plenty of hiking trails, picnic areas and fishing spots.
GREENE COUNTY
The Bike Shop at Windham Mountain Outfitters (windhamoutfitters.com) in Windham offers mountain bike rentals starting at $35 for four hours or $45 for 24 hours, as well as free local trail maps.
Catskill Cycles (catskillcycles.com) in the village of Catskill not only offers bike rentals for $35 for day, but also sells new, used and vintage bikes sold by very knowledgeable staff.
PaddleHead Boards (paddleheadboards.weebly.com) in Athens specializes in stand up paddleboards but offers “beachy” bike rentals for $25 per day. Ride along the Hudson River or bring them up the mountains on your way.
OTSEGO COUNTY
Woodland Cycles (woodlandcycles.com) in Milford offers rentals for $30 for half a day or $40 for a full day. Each additional day costs $35 and weekly rentals are available for $175. It offers sells new bicycles and is home to a full-service repair department.
SULLIVAN COUNTY
Cinder Track Bicycles (cindertrackbikeshop.blogspot.com) in Mountaindale offers a variety of bike rental options, including hybrids, comfort, road and mountain bikes starting at $18 for three hours and $35 per day, as well as trailers and bicycles for children. It’s also conveniently located right on the O & W Rail Trail.
Ridgeback Sports (ridgebacksports.com) in Callicoon offers bicycle rentals for $15 per hour on weekdays and $20 per hour on weekends or $40 per day on weekdays or $60 per day on weekends.
ULSTER COUNTY
Overlook Mountain Bikes (overlookmountainbikes.com) in Woodstock provides bike rentals starting at $40 for a day, $30 for half a day or $10 per hour. It also offers weekly package deals and car rack rentals.
Catskill Mountain Storehouse (storehouseny.com) in Phoenicia is an outfitter that offers bike rentals for $25 per day, as well as camping and hiking gear rentals.
The Graham & Co. (thegrahamandco.com) in Phoenicia is a boutique hotel that provides many unique amenities, including free bikes for guests. Located just a few blocks from Phoenicia’s main street, the bikes allow for easy access to shops and restaurants.
Update: After we went to press, an alert reader informed us about a 14th bike rental location that just opened this summer in Ulster County: Happy Trails Bike Rental, on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail between New Paltz and Rosendale. They rent bikes at $10 per hour or $40 for a full day.
