A year after it was begun, a New York State program to help homeowners pay for damage inflicted by Irene, Lee and Sandy is coming to a close. The NY Rising Housing Recovery Program, which funds repair, mortgage assistance, flood mitigation and buyouts of damaged homes, has declared a deadline of April 11, 2014 for homeowners to apply for assistance.
The program has already paid out over $280 million to 6,388 homeowners around the state whose homes were damaged, according to a press release announcing the deadline.
Catskills residents interested in applying to the program are encouraged to attend one of NY Rising's upcoming outreach events, scheduled in several locations around the region for this Saturday, March 29. The events will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following locations:
- Greene County: Palenville Public Library, 3335 New York 23A, Palenville
- Schoharie County: Cornell Cooperative Extension Schoharie, 173 South Grand St., Suite 1, Cobleskill
- Delaware County: Sidney Civic Center, 21 Liberty Street, Sidney
- Orange County: SUNY Orange Middletown Campus, 115 South Street, Middletown
- Ulster County: The Kirkland, 2 Main Street, (Corner of Main St. and Clinton Ave. for GPS, use 244 Clinton Ave), Kingston
Sullivan County does not have an outreach event scheduled for Saturday, but Sullivan County homeowners whose homes were damaged in Sandy or Irene are eligible to apply for help through the program.
Homeowners who are unable to attend the events can still find out more information about the program, or submit an application, by visiting the program's website at stormrecovery.ny.gov or by calling the program's hotline at 1-855-697-7263.
Funding for the program is provided by the state's Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
