A head-on collision between two cars on Cat Hollow Road in the rural Delaware County town of Colchester claimed the life of a Nineveh man, and injured four Bronx residents, on Thursday morning.
The crash occurred around 10 am on Thursday, August 21, when an Isuzu Amigo driven by 48-year-old William Sharpless of Nineveh collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 30-year-old Bronx resident Crest Wood.
Sharpless was driving south on Cat Hollow Road when his car was struck head-on by Wood's Jeep, which was driving northbound in the southbound lane, according to a statement from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office. The incident was investigated by the New York State Police Troop C Collision Reconstruction Unit and Delaware County sheriff's deputies.
Sharpless was declared dead on the scene by Delaware County medical examiner Richard Ucci. He had no passengers in his car.
All of the occupants of the Jeep -- Wood, 34-year-old Alnie Chisholm, 19-year-old Georgette King and 21-year-old Yolanda Jones, all from the Bronx -- were seriously injured. All four were transported to Harris Hospital in Liberty, and later transferred to Westchester Medical Center.
No charges have been filed, but the incident is still under investigation. Delaware County sheriff's deputies are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact the Sheriff's Office at 607-746-2336.
Responding to the scene, along with state and county police, were the Downsville and Roscoe-Rockland Fire Departments, Delaware County Highway Department, Downsville and Roscoe-Rockland Ambulance, Cooperstown Medical Transport and Mobil Medic.
Update: After this story was published, we were contacted by one of about a dozen ordinary citizens who were on the scene of this accident before first responders, and who risked danger to save the lives of the four women in the Jeep.
