Much of Camp Shira, a Jewish summer camp in a rural Sullivan County community dotted with camps and bungalow colonies, was destroyed by a fast-moving fire on Monday, Oct. 6, according to the Times Herald-Record and other news outlets.
Camp Shira, located the community of Sackett Lake, operated as Camp Ta-Go-La in the 1950s and 1960s.
The fire began on Monday night, according to the THR, JP Updates, and the Yeshiva World News, and quickly consumed over a dozen buildings before being subdued by over 100 firefighters who worked all night to put it out.
A caretaker was at the camp at the time of the fire, and was uninjured, according to the THR. In an interview with a THR reporter, Monticello's Assistant Fire Chief, A.J. Washington, said that the camp is only occupied in the summer.
