Sun glare and crowded traffic conditions caused a rear-end chain collision that resulted in a three-car pileup on Rte. 28 in West Hurley Tuesday evening, according to an Ulster County Sheriff's Office press release.
The accident reportedly began when 52-year-old Ellery Jarrette of Pine Hill slowed for traffic as he drove westbound on Rte. 28. Seventy-six-year-old Eugenie Wilkes of Shokan rear-ended Jarrette, and then was rear-ended herself by 51-year-old Douglas McKinley of West Hurley, whose pickup truck flipped over upon impact. The crash resulted in only minor injuries, the police reported.
Mike A. of the West Hurley Fire Department was at the scene and took photos of the crash, which were posted on the department's Facebook page. The department reported via Facebook that Rte. 28 was closed for about an hour:
on 10/16 @ 17:51 WHFD responded to a PIAA roll over Rte between Old 28 and Old 28. Olive was called mutual with Fire Police. 28 was closed / detoured for about an hour.

A three car personal injury moter vehicle accident that occurred on State Route 28 in West Hurley.
On October 16th, at approximately 5:51PM, Deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a 3 car personal injury motor vehicle accident with one vehicle rolled over on State Route 28, just north of Maverick Rd. Investigation at the scene determined a 2003 Hyundai Accent operated by Ellery A. Jarrette, age 52 of Pine Hill, NY was traveling westbound on State Route 28 when he slowed down for traffic. As Mr. Jarrette slowed, his vehicle was rear ended by a 2000 Nissan Maxima, operated by a Eugenie Wilkes, age 76 of Shokan. NY. Mrs. Wilkes' vehicle was then rear ended by 2002 GMC Sonoma pickup truck operated by Douglas McKinley, age 51 of West Hurley. The pickup truck overturned upon impact. All operators of the vehicles were transported to Kingston Hospital with minor injuries. A passenger, Jenny Jarrette, age 56, in the Hyundai was also transported to Kingston Hospital with minor injuries.
No traffic summons were issued. Contributing factors to the accident were determined to be sun glare and following too closely.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, West Huxley Fire Department, West Hurley Ambulance and Mobile Life Support Services.
