Two weeks of maple syrup mania begin this weekend, and maple producers across New York State will be celebrating with open houses, pancake breakfasts, and lots of the sweet stuff.
It would take the whole two weekends to list every mapley Catskills event and tidbit, so here are some highlights:
- Herb Van Baren, the owner of Oliverea Schoolhouse Maple Syrup, reported via Facebook on February 24 that the sap is running well this year. (Van Baren's business was damaged by Tropical Storm Irene last August, but he was open for business just a few days later. He helped us coin the post-flood Twitter hashtag #iaintdone.) Now he says:
it's been awhile since the flood and things have not changed much in Oliverea. I am boiling sap and making pure maple syrup for the 20th year. Saps been flowing well and the syrup is fantastic.
- Local foodies have maple fever. You can get maple-flavored beer in Stamford, maple-flavored pork ribs in Arkville, and maple-flavored yogurt and ice cream from local Catskills creameries.
- Red Cottage Inc., a Watershed Post advertiser, is giving away jugs of maple syrup to renters who visit Grahamsville's Catskill Mountain Sugar House on either March 17 & 18 or March 24 & 25.
- Another advertiser, Frost Valley YMCA, is offering free tours and tastings during both weekends.
- You want pancakes? You can get 'em in three counties over the next two weeks.
- Find Delaware County pancake breakfasts at North Franklin Maple Syrup in Franklin (8am to 11am both weekends Sat. and Sun.), at Shaver-Hill Maple Farm in Harpersfield (9am to 3pm both weekends Sat. and Sun.), at Fleischmanns Community Church (904 Main St., 8am - 11am, 3/24) and at the Fire Department (904 Main St., 10am - 2pm, 3/25) in Fleischmanns, and at Catskill Mountain Maple (64 Charley Wood Rd., mornings both weekends Sat. and Sun.) in DeLancey.
- In Schoharie County, head to Stone House Farm (305 Lynk Rd., both weekends Sat. and Sun.) in Sharon Springs, or to Buck Hill Farm (185 Fuller Rd., 9am - 1pm both weekends Sun.) in Jefferson.
- In Ulster County, head to Platte Creek Maple Farm (9am - 2pm, 3/24) in Woodstock.
