Two programs that have been helping with the local effort to rebuild and restore the region after the Irene and Lee floods announced application deadlines this week.
A $2.5 million program for funding debris removal from streams in the New York City watershed, launched by the Catskill Watershed Corporation in December, is nearing the end of its funding and will be closed to new applications next week. The CWC announced today that the Stream Corridor Protection Debris Removal Program will continue taking applications until 4pm on Monday, April 16.
From a press release from the CWC:
“There was no deadline imposed when the program was launched, but the demand for assistance from municipalities and property owners has stretched staff and monetary resources nearly to the limit,” said CWC Executive Director Alan Rosa in explaining what prompted the imposition of an end date for the program.
The release said that of 81 applications submitted to the program, eight projects have been completed, 16 have been approved and await estimates, 19 were under review, and 17 were deemed ineligible for funding.
Another local flood recovery program, the MARK Project's Town of Middletown Small Business Development Fund, announced this week that they are extending the deadline for applications for a competitive round of grants from the fund until May 15.
The grants are only available to businesses in the Town of Middletown.

On March 24, MARK Project Executive Director Peg Ellsworth and Deputy Director Kent Brown held an application workshop to launch a new $25,000 competitive grant funding round and over twenty business owners and entrepreneurs were in attendance. “Some interesting business concepts were floated around during the workshop” said Ellsworth “ but the six weeks given to develop the application and a full blown business plan seemed to cause a bit of trepidation among some of the potential applicants.” With this in mind, Ellsworth went back the Fund Review Committee and requested a deadline extension. “I would hate to see some great ideas for new development or business expansion fall through the cracks because they were intimidated by the timeline or process” added Ellsworth.
