Stayin' Alive: Rules of the road

Spring has sprung and with beautiful weather in store please be careful, particularly on the roads. The spring season tends to bring a higher incidence of auto accidents to the area, particularly on Route 28. Take a moment during this busy driving season to reflect on your own safety precautions prior to and during transit. Always wearing a seat belt, keeping a safe distance from the car in front of you, making sure children are in properly fitted and installed child safety seats, driving alertly, observing posted speed limits, and never operating a vehicle while impaired are just a few things you can do to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road.

Also, don’t forget about our friends and visitors that are fortunate enough to take a mountain ride on their motorcycles. Share the road and be mindful of our fair-leathered friends. Riders, be sure to always wear a helmet and to watch out for gravel, potholes, and deer!

Rich Muellerleile, captain of the Shandaken Ambulance Service, has contributed this digest of common sense driving rules you should keep in mind whether you're feeling the wind in your hair or enjoying the AC.  He will be posting regular safety tips in his new column, Stayin' Alive, on our Shandaken town page
