They're here at last: sweet, tender sugar snap peas, the star of the early-summer vegetable garden. The owners of Catskill Native Nursery in Kerhonkson posted this photo of the first of their Sugar Anne peas on their Facebook wall today.
Pea season means it's time for strawberries, too. Dressel Farms in New Paltz announced yesterday that the first of their strawberries are in, and they'll be starting U-Pick soon.
This spring's weird weather hasn't been kind to Catskills gardeners, though. The Catskill Kiwi bemoans the destruction of most of her precious tomato seedlings in last week's winds:
At the local farmers market I got a replacement Black Cherry and a Black Krim, which I am hoping is like my original Black Prince. Ruby was replaced with Brandywine and Polish (a new choice) I replaced with a Striped German.
Needless to say I spent some time trying to find a suitable wind break material to secure to the back garden fence where the wind comes screaming in… a little too late I know. Ah hindsight…
