NYC evacuates as Irene nears North Carolina

The forecasts for Hurricane Irene are getting grim. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered unprecedented evaucations of low-lying coastal areas in New York City. President Barack Obama has cut short his Massachusetts vacation to come home to Washington, DC in advance of the storm, and states of emergency are blanketing the east coast.

The Wall Street Journal is calling Irene a "once-in-a-lifetime storm" for most New Yorkers.
