Two drivers in two counties took the hit-and-run to new places this past weekend.
The first, a 20-year-old Narrowsburg man, reportedly hit a guardrail on Gables Road in the town of Tusten on Saturday, and then drove off. Not only did Victor J. Chmura drive off, State Police report, he allegedly was later caught on video driving so fast that his car caught air for a few moments before gouging the asphalt on its landing. Saturday, April 23, 2011 - Troopers investigated an accident on Gables Road in the town of Tusten in which a vehicle struck the guiderails and then left the scene. Witnesses were able to provide a description of the driver and pieces of the vehicle were collected. Shortly after, as a homeowner was video taping on his property he caught a high speed vehicle on tape. The vehicle was travelling so fast it went airborne and left gouges in the asphalt where it landed. Troopers located the vehicle, a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria, and driver on Tyler Road in the town of Cochecton. 20 yr old Victor J. Chmura of Narrowsburg, NY was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, Fail to stop/stop sign and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle. He will appear in the town of Tusten court on May 12, 2011 to answer the charges.
The second hit-and-run artist was a Delaware County man who, according to the Daily Star, hit another vehicle while pulling onto County Road 47 from I-88 in Oneonta. After causing the accident, the Star reports, the unnamed 85-year-old Sidney man left the scene in his damaged vehicle and drove another mile to his doctor's office, where he had an appointment:
The man, whose identity was not immediately released, parked his heavily damaged car in a handicap space at FoxCare Center and went to his appointment, where troopers later caught up to him. No injuries were reported.
