Fugitive foiled by barking dog

On Sunday, state troopers arrested an Iowa man and a California woman on Route 17B after a concert at Bethel Woods, after receiving reports of a man and a woman arguing in a stopped car.

According to the police, the pair were arguing because a dog in the car would not stop barking -- and, upon investigation, driver Adriana C. Nava was found to be intoxicated, and passenger Ian C. Chitwood was found to have a warrant out for his arrest for marijuana possession in Illinois.

As Troopers were directing traffic onto State Rte 17B at the conclusion of a Further concert at BPAC they received reports that two people were arguing in a vehicle.  Troopers approached the 2004 Ford Focus and learned that a male and a female had stopped the vehicle and were arguing because a dog in the car would not stop barking. 

 

Police quickly discovered that the operator, Adriana C. Nava, age 22 of Soquel, CA was intoxicated.  She was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.  The passenger in the car Ian C. Chitwood, age 30 of Runnells, Iowa was found to be in possession of Marijuana, Hashish and fireworks.  He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana and Unlawfully Dealing with Fireworks.  During arrest processing it was discovered that Mr. Chitwood was wanted out of the County of Peoria, State of Illinois for felony Unlawful Possession of Cannabis.  He was charged with being a Fugitive from Justice.  

 

Both were arraigned in the town of Bethel court.  Ms. Nava was remanded to the Sullivan County jail in lieu of $1,000 bail while Mr. Chitwood was remanded in lieu of $10,000 bail awaiting possible extradition to Illinois.
