A Brooklyn teenager (whose name is still being withheld) is missing and presumed drowned after attempting to swim across the Delaware River near Narrowsburg yesterday evening.
The Times Herald-Record reports:
The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office was notified by 911 of a possible drowning at 6:58 p.m.
“It is still daylight and he made it about a third of the way across and then had difficulty swimming,” Undersheriff Eric Chaboty said. “Two friends swam back and he slipped beneath the water. That is the last time anybody saw him.
Catskill Scoop also reported the incident, and sought a comment from a local boat rental company:
An employee at one of the canoe and raft rental places told CatskillScoop.com that statistics show that every drowning victim in the Delaware, was not wearing a life jacket when they drowned.
The Times Herald-Record reports that this is the third drowning on the Upper Delaware River this year. Just last month, a 71-year-old Long Island man drowned near Hawk's Nest after he was flung from his raft.
