Airport contractor leaves Sullivan County in the lurch

Arcadia Aviation, a NYC-based company hired by Sullivan County to operate the Sullivan County International Airport in Bethel, has shut down abruptly, leaving $10,000 in unpaid lease fees and $25 million in broken promises in its wake. The Times Herald-Record reports:

The Manhattan company hired to fuel and maintain jets at Sullivan County's airport abruptly shut down two weeks ago, leaving unpaid lease payments and a failed promise to spend $25 million on new hangars and office space.

Both Sullivan County's government and the county Industrial Development Agency are terminating agreements with Arcadia Aviation, which told Public Works Commissioner Bob Meyer on May 31 it was ceasing operations at 5 p.m. that day.

Sullivan County isn't the only place where there's been drama over Arcadia. The Journal of West Virginia reported on June 8 that Arcadia had abruptly shut down operations at the Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport, leaving the airport authority in limbo:

"I got a call from an employee who advised me that May 31 would be the employees' last day," Rick Wachtel, Airport Authority chairman, said in a telephone interview Tuesday....

..."Then I got a call from the owner, Bob Garrett, who was apologizing all over himself," Wachtel continued. "He said that he thought he had financing lined up, but he can't operate - he's out of funds."
