John Duda, the chairman of the the group -- the Central Catskills Collaborative -- that is attempting to give Rte. 28 scenic byway status, is steamed about recent recent reports in the Daily Freeman and the Catskill Mountain News that towns along the road are refusing to fund the project.
That's not the case at all, he writes in a strongly-worded letter to both papers about the stories:
The only purpose served by this article is to attack the Byway before it is even born by trying to create the impression that there is a lack of support for it. In fact, the towns and villages have been quite supportive, and many people besides the town supervisors and village mayors, or their representatives, have been coming to the meetings.
